Retail sales numbers keep coming in stronger than expected, and the trade industry's own forecasters are projecting healthy growth for the year. That sounds like consumers are out there buying more than ever. Look at what's actually driving the number, and a lot of that "growth" turns out to be prices going up, not shopping carts filling up.

This could be bigger than Tesla and SpaceX combined
Editor’s Note: Jeff Brown and Marc Chaikin, two investment legends who picked Nvidia 10 years ago, are predicting that by the end of this month, Elon Musk’s new AI breakthrough will collide with a strange market pattern with a flawless 100% track record of massive market gains. Click here to see the details or read more below because the last time this happened everyday folks had a chance to turn $10,000 into as much as $350,000 in just about 12 months.
Dear Reader,
Take a look at Elon Musk’s new patent below…
Because it protects a new invention that could rewrite the future of wealth forever.
I’m talking about a radical new form of AI I call “M.A.G.I.”
One so revolutionary that Elon called it an “infinite money glitch.”
Click here to see the details because he believes this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create wealth on a scale most people can’t even comprehend.
What’s the upside potential here?
I know this is going to sound crazy…
But Elon is projecting growth of over 7,000,000%.
Let that sink in.
That’s enough to turn $100 into more than $7 million.
This sounds absolutely insane.
But then again… everything Elon has ever done sounded insane at first.
Self-driving cars.
Reusable rockets that land themselves.
Brain chips that let paralyzed people control computers with their minds.
Crazy ideas.
But he turned them into trillion-dollar realities.
So here’s the real question…
Will you watch Elon build another empire from the sidelines…
Or will you finally position yourself to potentially become one of the winners in his next trillion-dollar revolution?
Click here to get the details because I believe Elon will flip the switch on this new invention by the end of this month.

We have so much to look forward to,

A Real Number With an Unreal Story Behind It
Retail sales are projected to grow around 4% this year in dollar terms. But independent research estimates that the actual volume of goods being purchased, meaning how much stuff people are physically buying, is growing by only about 1%. The difference between those two numbers is almost entirely higher prices. Retailers are selling roughly the same amount of merchandise, just charging more for it, and that shows up in the headline as growth.
What Actually Fueled the Recent Bump
Real consumer spending did rebound sharply in the second quarter of this year, jumping over 3% after a sluggish start to the year. A meaningful part of that came from larger than usual tax refunds tied to last year's reconciliation act, plus a still-resilient job market and rising wealth concentrated among higher-income households. Those are specific, identifiable factors, not evidence of a broad, sustainable acceleration in everyday household spending.
The Same Income Split Shows Up Here Too
Forecasters are explicit that this spending strength is not spread evenly. Higher-income households are expected to keep driving most of the growth, while lower and middle-income households are not seeing the same lift. That lines up with a pattern that keeps showing up across this economy this year: the aggregate numbers look encouraging, but they are leaning heavily on one slice of the population doing most of the spending.
Final Take
A retail sales headline that beats expectations is genuinely useful information, but it is not the same as a strong signal about the typical household's finances. If your own spending hasn't felt like it's growing, you are likely looking at the same data from the side of the ledger that isn't driving the number. What's rising for the country as a whole is largely prices and a temporary refund-driven bump for households that were already comfortable.
